With a culmination of great poker skills, a great read on his opponents, and incredible mathematical skills, this bug-eyed champion with a heart of steel, has become the greatest poker player in the world. People argue that other players are better, and that the top player is impossible to conclude because any of the best can beat each other on any given day.
However, even though a player must play the cards he is dealt, Phil Ivey has proven that even when the cards that are dealt to him aren't the best, he makes the most of them.
There is one hand in particular that comes to mind. Phil is sitting heads up against another player, his name skips my mind, but it was the final table at a main event. Phil was delay 10 3 off suit. His opponent was delay Q 9 off suit. Phil was on the BB and his opponent acted first. He raised pre-flop.
With the 10 3 off, Phil had one of the worst starting hands in poker. Phil stared him down and re-raised him. I was shocked when I saw this. His opponent stared down Phil. He waited for a moment, and re-raised Phil heavy. Phil, again, with the most incredible reading abilities I had ever seen, re-raised his opponent. His opponent, in turn, re-raised Phil again.
Phil took a long pause and in an incredibly daring move, went ALL IN! Phil had just slaughtered the heart of his opponent, and incredibly, his opponent folded!
Phil took down an incredible pot pre-flop with one of the worst starting hands in Holdem! This hand will always be referred to as the „Greatest poker hand ever played.
I challenge anyone to say that Phil is not the greatest poker player in the world. This one hand really proves that he is the greatest and is always the man to beat. |
